Firstly I would like to say what a privilege it was to be invited to judge your Championship show for 2007. I would also like to say that I had a great time and really enjoyed the day, the sights and the friendly people of New Zealand. The show was well run and a credit to your committee and the New Zealand Stafford fancy for its success.

I thank you and your committee for the privilege and opportunity to judge your wonderful show.

There are a lot of positives about the breed in New Zealand, plenty of breed type and many other great attributes. It was great to see so many pump handle tails as it is not unusual now days to see a lot of Stafford’s with high set or gay tails.

For a small exhibiter group you have a great gene pool. I noticed in the marked catalogue I received after the show that many people have gone to the expense to import from both the U.K. and Australia, this can only enhance the great qualities that New Zealand dogs already have.

However, there were a couple of points I feel that I need to speak about that are for me a major concern. I will speak about them here rather than individualize them to particular dogs;

1.)     Inverted / converging canines;

While I only saw a couple of undershot mouths on the day I must say that I was shocked by the amount of inverted canines that were present.  To put it in perspective, I would have had one or two in nearly every class. This is a major concern for your breeding programs. I did have the opportunity to speak to some owners who were not even aware of what inverted canines were. My belief is that as breeders and custodians of the breed we have a duty of care to educate new owners, both show and pet, of all the great things about our breed but also the potential problems.  Simply for the dogs health it is of major importance that people are aware of them and for that matter all the hereditary diseases that are associated with our breed. It may be time for a club breed lecture or articles in the magazine.

2.)     Length of back, level toplines;

There were far too many dogs overall that were too long in the back, the standard states, “close coupled, with a level topline”.

3.)     Fit dogs;

We must remember what our breed was bred to do, they should look fit and hard and whilst we don’t condone it they must appear to be able to do what they were bred for. Nothing looks worse than an overweight Stafford.
