I wish to thank the Committee of the Northern SBTC of NZ for inviting me to judge your dogs at your October Championship Show in Auckland. My apologies for the late critique...but jet-lag and a tight schedule on return back home kept me away from the keyboards longer than anticipated.
I also wish to thank Gordon and Bessie Armstrong for having me prior to the show and showing me around your parts of the woods.
My thanks also for the nice BBQ on the Sunday and further thanks to Karen Looker for her hospitality and dropping me off.
I thought that your dogs had the edge over the bitches on show day. There were a few, perhaps 4 exhibits that had inverted canines, but on the whole your mouths are good. Dark nails on a few animals could be darker, a black or even a dark brindle dog should have black nails..
A few dogs that presented themselves very nicely in the ring when shown statically ,were penalized when on the move, either front ,mostly rear and also showing some roaching, with a nice bitch that punched out on the move, one bitch even had a rear limp.
The "points" awarded according to the Standard makes us a head breed, but it still only accounts for 25% of the total i.e. there is 75% more to consider.....and if the dog cannot move correctly (which "only" has a "point" weighting of 5% - same as tail carriage or movement), then there is structurally something amiss.
Nap Cairns ("Constones" U.K. Judge) was famous for saying that the dog only has to move 7 foot -to the scratch line!! Well, the problem is when he crosses the line, then he needs to be structurally sound to continue the business he walked the 7 foot for ...otherwise he gets wrestled out of contention.Best in Show went to the Red/fawn dog winner in the Open class and CC winner. He is a classy dog. On any show winning dog one could want one or two points improved on the dog, but on the overall balance he was the hardest and soundest dog presented that could compete anywhere. He is a credit to the breed.
The reserve BIS was another good example of compact power with overall soundness.
